Most robot mowers work without a subscription. You pay extra for remote control over cellular, GPS theft tracking, and on some models network RTK. Several makers bundle a free period, so check how long it lasts before you compare prices.
Over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the app works at home for free on the models we track. A cellular module lets you check the mower from anywhere and track it if stolen. That link is what usually carries a fee after the trial ends.
Network RTK services correct satellite position without an antenna in your yard. Where a maker sells this as a service, it can carry a fee too.
Segway Navimow lists optional 4G on the i105 at $32.90 a year. Its X3 models bundle Connect+ for a set number of years, from 2 years on the X330 to 5 years on the X390.
Mammotion says the US LUBA mini 2 includes 3 years of 4G data. Its EU page for the YUKA 2000 lists 1 year of 4G free and network RTK free for lawns up to 3,000 m².
Worx lists a cloud RTK service on the WR310, with no antenna. Sunseeker includes 4G GPS on the X7 Plus Gen 2 and sells it as an option on the X7 Gen 2.
Add the plan's yearly cost after the free period to the purchase price, then compare five-year totals. Our cost-of-ownership calculator has a field for it.

No. The models we track mow and work with the app over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth without one. Subscriptions add cellular access, theft tracking or network RTK.

The mower keeps mowing. Remote access over cellular and features tied to it stop until you pay.
For an expensive mower in a front yard you can't see from the house, yes. A PIN lock and lift alarm cover most other cases.
